Needs Statement
Obesity has become a national issue. Kentucky, specifically, ranks in the top 10 states for obesity and sedentary lifestyle, in addition to diabetes. Type 2 diabetes used to be “adult onset diabetes”; however, in recent years, diabetes in adolescents is on the rise, primarily due to obesity. Health care professionals need to recognize the problem, identify children and adolescents at risk, and understand appropriate treatments.Target Audience
Multidisciplinary primary care health care professionals including but not limited to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, social workers, dentists, podiatrists, psychologists, and optometrists who encounter adolescents in their practice sites.Objectives
1. Identify the diagnosis criteria for type 2 diabetes in children2. Review treatment and monitoring options for children with type 2 diabetes
3. Describe the long-term consequences of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes
4. Recognize the need for a multi-disciplinary healthcare team for patient management
