Needs Statement

The intensive care unit (ICU) is an increasingly important locus of patient care. While medical students and resident physicians need to learn the unique features of medical care in these areas, important features of the ICU environment can prevent effective teaching in this arena. These features include technology such as mechanical ventilators and monitoring devices, limited ability to perform physical examination, and an over-abundance of laboratory and radiographic information. This session seeks to highlight these potential impediments and develop a hypothesis and concrete strategies for effective ICU teaching.

Target Audience

Physicians

Objectives

1. Discuss what makes the ICU a different learning environment;
2. Describe different learning theories and how they can be used in the ICU.
