Needs Statement
Although substantial progress has been made in terms of the development of antiretroviral therapies and making them available to patients with HIV, many challenges remain in terms of when to initiate therapy and whom to treat. In addition, the efficacy and safety of new therapies, the role of ART in the prevention of HIV infection, and HIV/TB co-infection are of great concern and are at the center of significant research. The Positive Pulse newsletter series provides clinicians with reports and clinical commentaries on the most significant data presented on these issues and others at major medical meetings throughout the year. In this issue of Positive Pulse: Expert Commentaries from IAS 2009, clinical experts will review data presented at the IAS meeting in South Africa on the benefits of earlier initiation of ART, HIV and TB epidemics, improved prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, the role of ART as prevention refining ART options, promising results with new integrase inhibitors in development, conflicting data on NRTI exposure and CVD risk and evaluating ART in women and racial minoritiesTarget Audience
