Needs Statement

The inability to absorb certain sugars affects the lives of patients not only within Kentucky but also in the US and beyond.  The symptoms that present themselves for these patients can be misdiagnosed due to the challenge of detecting them properly.  The lack of information available concerning identifying and treating this condition prolongs the risk of misdiagnosis. This course will give the participant information concerning certain malabsorption and tolerance of certain sugars. 

Target Audience

Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practioners

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, particpants will be able to:

Review the consequences of misdiagnosis of patients with lactose intolerance.
Discuss the benefits of performing a breath hydrogen test to diagnose malabsorption of certain sugars.
Identify sugars that are not absorbed and the reason for this.
