Needs Statement

Use of alcoholic beverages to excess, either on individual occasions ("binge drinking") or as a regular practice. For some individuals-children or pregnant women, for example-almost any amount of alcohol use may be legally considered "alcohol abuse," depending on local laws. Heavy alcohol abuse can cause physical damage and death.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians who treat alcohol dependence.

Objectives

1. Identify the major medical consequence of alcohol abuse/dependence;
2. Become familiar with methods of detoxification from alcohol dependence;
3. Identify options of pharmacotherapy for the treatment of alcohol dependence;
4. Recognize the importance of identifying comorbid conditions such as depressive and anxiety disorders.
