Needs Statement

Seasonal influenza is responsible for approximately 36,000 deaths each year in the United States alone.  Avian (H5N1) influenza has caused fatalities in many countries as well.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) no longer recommend amantadine or rimantadine for treatment or prophylaxis of seasonal or pandemic influenza due to resistance in circulating strains.  The evolution of new viruses has historically been associated with large-scale outbreaks causing widespread morbidity and mortality. Pharmacists are in a unique position of first-line patient accessibility and can use this opportunity to educate the public on the risks of seasonal and pandemic influenza.  Understanding seasonal and pre-pandemic influenza vaccines, and their availability, will also allow pharmacists to be a valuable resource to their patients and the public in general.
