Needs Statement
This course is designed to provide the participant with the information needed to perform the complex task of aseptic compounding of sterile products in a pharmacy setting. The major challenge is to ensure that the compounded product has a high level of sterility assurance and that the product administered to the patient is safe and effective. The course should prove useful to compounding technicians, pharmacists and those contemplating design of aseptic compounding facilities.
Target Audience
Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with an interest in the proper methods for preparing sterile medications.Objectives
1. Aseptic compounding procedures and technique;2. Use of unidirectional airflow hoods and containment isolators;
3. Cleaning, disinfection and decontamination;
4. The modes of contamination;
5. The difference between “sterile” and “aseptic”;
6. Low, medium and high risk categories of aseptically compounded sterile products.

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy is approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
This activity has been assigned ACPE # 022-000-08-024-H04-P and will award up to 1.00 contact hours (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit in states that recognize ACPE providers.
Statements of credit will indicate hours and CEUs based on participation and will be issued online at the conclusion of the activity. Successful completion includes completing the activity, its accompanying evaluation and/or posttest and requesting credit online at conclusion of the activity. The College complies with the Criteria for Quality for continuing education programming.
