Needs Statement

Despite the co-occurrence of adolescent substance abuse and trauma exposure, the fields have developed separately. Research demonstrates a need for an integrated approach to assessing and treating both conditions.

Target Audience

Physicians, Pharmacists, Health Administrators, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Drug and Alcohol Counselors, and practitioners of addiction medicine.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:
1. Describe the rates of co-occurrence of adolescent substance misuse, trauma exposure and traumatic stress
2. Discuss potential trauma reminders that may trigger a trauma response during substance abuse treatment
3. List three examples of integrated treatment for co-occurring substance abuse and traumatic stress in youth
